Electrocardiogram (ECG)

What is an electrocardiogram?

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple, quick and painless test that records the heart's electrical activity. ECGs are most often performed on patients with chest pain or diagnosed heart disease, and also when heart disease is suspected. They are also performed when cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure and heart failure are suspected.

An ECG is informative and suitable for patients of any age.

When should an electrocardiogram be performed?

  • Complaints about heart rhythm;
  • Pain in the heart area;
  • Fainting of unknown cause;
  • High blood pressure;
  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Determination of heart function indicators after myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle);
  • Altered heart sounds;
  • Decreased oxygen in the blood;
  • Blue-coloured skin and mucous membranes;
  • Decreased resistance to physical exertion;
  • Heart failure;
  • Before surgery or certain examinations.

The need for examination is determined by the attending specialist after assessing the patient's general health.

At the FORTEMED medical centre, ECGs are performed using a modern, highly sensitive digital cardiograph. The examination is quick and painless, and the results are available immediately after the procedure.
