Liver elastography

What is liver elastography?

Elastography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique designed to assess tissue elasticity. Specifically, liver elastography uses ultrasound technology to measure the stiffness of liver tissue, which aids in the diagnosis of various liver diseases, including:
  • Liver fibrosis;
  • Cirrhosis;
  • Liver cancer;
  • Liver steatosis (fatty liver);
  • Chronic effects of hepatitis C.

Advantages of elastography

Liver elastography is an advanced method that provides a quick and painless assessment of liver condition:
  • Non-invasive and painless procedure;
  • Minimised risks to patient health;
  • Detailed information about the structure and stiffness of liver tissue;
  • Ability to diagnose a variety of liver diseases;
  • Monitoring of treatment effectiveness.

How is elastography performed?

The procedure involves applying a special gel to the skin and then performing an ultrasound examination. An ultrasound sensor is gently pressed against the liver tissue to detect changes in its elasticity. These changes are displayed on the screen as a colour scale, allowing the specialist to assess the condition of the liver.

The procedure lasts 15 to 30 minutes and is comfortable for the patient. No special preparation is usually required for elastography. However, it is recommended that the doctor be informed in advance of all existing medical conditions and medications being taken.

A team of specialists traditionally interprets elastography results.
