Vascular surgeon

Who is a vascular surgeon?

A vascular surgeon is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats vascular diseases and performs surgical and minimally invasive procedures. They supply all arteries and veins in the body, except those of the heart and brain.

A vascular surgeon helps restore normal blood circulation, prevent complications, and improve the patient's quality of life, focusing on both acute and chronic vascular diseases.

The FORTEMED Medical Centre offers consultations with a vascular surgeon who diagnoses and treats patients with various vascular diseases.

You should consult a vascular surgeon if you have the following problems:
  • Vascular formations;
  • Aneurysms or dissections of the abdominal-thoracic aorta;
  • Ulcers;
  • Carotid artery pathologies;
  • Pain associated with peripheral artery disease.

Risk factors affecting vascular health:
  • Elevated blood lipid levels;
  • Arterial hypertension;
  • Smoking;
  • Diabetes;
  • Sedentary lifestyle;
  • Unhealthy diet;
  • Obesity (body mass index above 25 kg/m2).

Vascular diagnostics is based on thorough examination, analysis, inspection, and special screening methods. All of these allow, for example, the detection of blood clots in veins, the identification of features of blood vessel anatomy, and the narrowing of arteries, among other applications. In addition to duplex scanning of subcutaneous and deep veins, modern medicine offers segmental and local Doppler imaging of the latest generation, as well as measurement of the ankle-brachial index.

The FORTEMED Medical Centre offers the following methods of vascular diagnosis:
  • Ankle-brachial index measurement;
  • Dopplerography;
  • Ultrasound examination of the vessels of the legs and arms.

If necessary, the vascular surgeon will refer the patient for surgery at one of the hospitals where such procedures are performed.

Consultations are also available for patients who have undergone vascular surgery. During the consultation, the vascular surgeon will diagnose the condition of the operated area and help choose the optimal rehabilitation strategy.

If the patient complains of pain in the legs when walking, for example, a person walks 100 metres and feels pain in the calf or thigh. The pain indicates that the tissues are not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients, which the blood cannot deliver in sufficient quantities through the narrowed vessels during physical exertion. It's time to see a vascular surgeon!
