Who is an allergist?
An allergist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of allergic diseases. An allergy is a disorder of the immune system in which the body reacts inappropriately to normal substances in its environment, perceiving them as ‘foreign’ and producing antibodies against them, which cause allergic reactions on the skin, mucous membranes, respiratory tract, etc. (runny nose, itchy eyes, watery eyes, bronchospasm, hives, etc.). Allergens can be inhaled (pollen, house dust mites, mould, animal epithelium, etc.), ingested (nuts, apples, crustaceans, etc.) or contact: when touching the skin (dog saliva, various metals, etc.).
When should you see an allergist?
An allergist conducts various diagnostic tests, including skin prick tests and provocation tests. The condition of the respiratory tract and its reversibility are assessed, and an individualised treatment plan is developed.
An allergist consultation is recommended for:
- Prolonged or seasonal rhinitis;
- Watery eyes/tearing from both eyes;
- Hives;
- Mild dermatitis (contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, etc.);
- Unexplained itchy skin;
- Swelling;
- Rash;
- Drug allergy;
- Anaphylactic reactions to food or insect bites;
- Persistent cough;
- Suspected or diagnosed asthma, etc.
If you suspect you have an allergy, consult an allergist. Receiving treatment and understanding your symptoms can significantly improve your quality of life.
