What Is an Allergist?
An allergist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of allergic diseases. An allergy occurs when the immune system malfunctions, erroneously reacting to typical substances in the environment. It perceives them as "foreign," producing antibodies against them, which leads to allergic reactions in the skin, mucous membranes, respiratory tract, and more. These reactions can include symptoms like a runny nose, itchy eyes, tearing, bronchial spasms, and hives, among others. Allergens can be inhaled (e.g., pollen, dust mites, mold, animal dander), ingested (e.g., nuts, apples, shellfish), or contracted through direct contact (e.g., dog saliva, certain metals).
When Should You See an Allergist?
Allergists conduct various diagnostic tests, including skin prick tests, blood tests for specific antibodies, and provocation tests, to assess allergic sensitivities. They also evaluate the airways for any reversible conditions and devise individualized treatment plans.
It's advisable to consult with an allergist if you experience:
- Persistent or seasonal runny nose,
- Frequent sneezing,
- Persistent tearing of the eyes,
- Hives,
- Unexplained dermatitis (contact, atopic, etc.),
- Generalized skin itching,
- Swelling,
- Rashes,
- Medication allergies,
- Anaphylactic reactions to foods or insect stings,
- Chronic cough,
- Suspected or diagnosed asthma, and other related symptoms.
If you suspect an allergy, don't hesitate to seek guidance from an allergist. Proper management and comprehension of your symptoms can substantially enhance your quality of life.
