Psychiatrist

Who is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in psycho-emotional health problems and the treatment of mental disorders. With in-depth knowledge of both physical medicine and psycho-emotional health issues, a psychiatrist is a companion and a person who can help solve various mental health problems by choosing the necessary methods of therapy. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication if it is necessary for the treatment of psycho-emotional disorders.

When should you seek help from a psychiatrist?

Psycho-emotional health is no less important than physical health. Perhaps you have experienced changes in your emotional state, are experiencing excessive anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue and emotional exhaustion, or simply feel ‘off.’ We urge you not to ignore your feelings: it is perfectly normal to seek and receive professional help. Mental health problems should be addressed by a specialist who can assess their severity, explain the possible causes of the difficulties, answer your questions and, taking into account your individual needs and goals, select the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Statistics show that mental health problems are widespread: every year, 38.2% of the European population experiences various mental disorders. For example, in Latvia, 7.9% of the population experiences clinically significant depression each year, yet less than half seek help. This means many people who need help do not take advantage of available support and opportunities because of social stigma, fear, or a lack of information. Untreated mental disorders significantly impair quality of life, reduce work capacity and productivity, affect social and personal life, and can sometimes affect physical health, increasing the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. Timely and appropriate treatment can improve quality of life and help people regain control over their lives.

A psychiatrist can help if you are experiencing the following symptoms and disorders:

  • Depression: Prolonged, persistent depression, low mood, inability to enjoy things and activities that previously brought joy and pleasure, physical weakness and fatigue;
  • Other mood disorders: For example, bipolar disorder, when periods of depression alternate with periods of pathologically elevated mood;
  • Anxiety related to stress or neurotic disorders: Panic attacks, prolonged unfounded anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (obsessive thoughts and compulsive rituals), autonomic dysfunction or other somatoform disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.;
  • Burnout syndrome, overload, crisis situations;
  • Eating disorders: Compulsive overeating, anorexia nervosa or bulimia;
  • Sleep disorders: Difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night or feeling that you cannot get enough sleep;
  • Memory, concentration and cognitive impairment.

Regardless of the mental health issues you are facing, remember that help is available. At FORTEMED, we can provide you with professional support to resolve your psychological and emotional problems.

How does a consultation with a psychiatrist work?

The first consultation with a psychiatrist lasts 30 minutes to 1 hour. During this time, your difficulties and current problems will be identified, and your medical history will be taken (i.e. important life events, aspects of your psycho-emotional development, possible traumatic events), along with information about any accompanying somatic diseases, heredity, etc. This information will be important for the targeted selection of therapy.

The consultation will be more productive if you bring the results of previous examinations (EEG, head MRI, etc.), if available.

After the psychiatrist conducts a comprehensive examination, the need for additional therapeutic and diagnostic examinations is discussed with the patient. The ultimate goal of the consultation is to develop an individualised treatment plan that may include medication and/or psychotherapeutic interventions.

The FORTEMED Medical Centre offers both in-person and remote consultations, allowing you to receive high-quality psychiatric care wherever you are. This option is especially convenient for those who live outside Riga or Latvia and want to access our high-quality psychiatric care services.
