Pulmonologist

Who is a pulmonologist?

A pulmonologist (pneumologist) is a specialist who studies various pathologies of the bronchopulmonary system in detail, identifies them and determines a treatment plan, develops rehabilitation programmes for respiratory tract injuries, and eliminates problems with the respiratory system. They monitor and treat patients with pathological processes of the bronchi, congenital anomalies of the respiratory organs, and other congenital pathologies of the respiratory organs.

Pulmonologists treat and monitor the following diseases:

  • Asthma: A chronic inflammatory disease that causes narrowing of the airways and difficulty breathing;
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A progressive lung disease that makes breathing difficult;
  • Pneumonia: Acute or chronic inflammation of the airways;
  • Bronchitis: Inflammation of the lining of the airways, causing coughing and phlegm production;
  • Pneumonia (lung inflammation): Inflammation of the lung tissue, most often caused by infection;
  • Emphysema: Damage to the air sacs in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing;
  • Tuberculosis: A bacterial infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs;
  • Pulmonary fibrosis: Scarring of the lung tissue, impairing respiratory function;
  • Lung cancer: A malignant tumour of the lung tissue;
  • Pulmonary hypertension: Increased pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs;
  • Allergic respiratory diseases: Reactions that cause difficulty breathing;
  • Respiratory tract infections: Viral and bacterial infections that affect the respiratory system.

Modern diagnostic and therapeutic techniques enable the treatment of many diseases of the human respiratory system, significantly improving patients' quality of life and prognosis. Thanks to advanced medical technologies, accurate diagnostic methods, and targeted treatment approaches, specialists can diagnose even the most complex lung and bronchial diseases in a timely manner and develop an individualised treatment plan.

You should see a pulmonologist after a severe cold, flu, prolonged bronchitis, COVID-19, or the development of respiratory complications. In addition, consultation is necessary for people who have harmful habits, are overweight, have shortness of breath, allergic respiratory symptoms, or cough in the morning or during the day without visible signs of respiratory infection.

You should consult a pulmonologist at the FORTEMED medical centre if you experience any of the typical symptoms of respiratory system pathologies:

  • Prolonged cough or worsening cough when breathing deeply: Such complaints may indicate an inflammatory process in the respiratory tract, the spread of pathogens to the bronchial mucosa and lung tissue;
  • Difficulty breathing in or out, indicating obstruction or spasms in the bronchial tree. This may be due to allergic reactions, bronchial asthma or obstructive bronchitis;
  • Paroxysmal episodes of severe itching in the nose with sneezing, a feeling of congestion, severe coughing accompanied by general malaise, chest pressure, wheezing, and whistling when breathing.
  • Development of shortness of breath during physical exertion or at rest, a feeling of lack of air during any type of activity. Such complaints may indicate the development of pulmonary emphysema, pneumonia or heart disease;
  • Attacks of morning cough with phlegm: It is especially important to pay attention to this symptom in smokers, as it is a sign of chronic bronchitis, which can lead to the development of emphysema with respiratory distress;
  • A pulmonologist may also need to examine patients with untreated pneumonia that has a prolonged course or atypical clinical presentation.

A visit to a pulmonologist is important not only for people with existing health problems, but for everyone at least once in their lifetime. Such a visit helps to understand the functioning of the respiratory system and ensure that everything is in order, thereby preventing potentially serious complications in old age.

This is especially important for people who:

  • Lead an active lifestyle;
  • Engage in professional or intensive sports;
  • Plan to travel to countries with high average temperatures and/or humidity;
  • Plan to visit places with extremely low temperatures;
  • Are exposed to conditions of increased dust or air pollution;
  • Are planning strenuous physical activity: long hikes, marathons, mountain climbing, trekking, parachuting and other extreme physical activities.

The main task of a pulmonologist in such cases is to assess the capabilities of the respiratory system in order to identify possible risks associated with oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) and excessive physical exertion. Such a preventive examination enables the identification of potential problems at an early stage and the avoidance of serious complications in the future.

One of the main instrumental methods for assessing lung condition is spirometry. It helps to objectively assess the morphological component, functional activity, and both indicators simultaneously, which together reflect respiratory system disorders in detail. The FORTEMED medical centre uses a latest-generation spirograph with a digital flow analyser and intelligent detection of respiratory system defects.

In addition, the doctor may order blood tests, cytological examination of sputum, X-rays, computed tomography, or ultrasound. If necessary, the pulmonologist collaborates with specialists in other fields to achieve a more complete diagnosis and treatment of the patient.

Modern pulmonologists use these approaches not only to treat diseases but also to significantly improve patients' quality of life, reduce the risk of complications, and increase the chances of recovery.

  • High-precision imaging technologies;
  • High-tech methods of molecular diagnostics;
  • Personalised treatment regimens;
  • Targeted therapy;
  • Minimally invasive procedures.
