Therapeutic nerve blocks

What is a therapeutic nerve block?

A therapeutic or medication nerve block is a precise treatment method in which medication is administered directly to the anatomical area where pain or inflammation is located. This precision ensures rapid therapeutic effects and minimal systemic effects.

The effectiveness of the block depends on two factors: the correct selection of medications and the precise administration technique. This provides immediate results: pain reduction, muscle relaxation, and reduction of inflammation and swelling.

The main goal of the procedure is to restore the patient to a full life, to restore freedom of movement, and to create favourable conditions for further therapy and recovery.

Where are therapeutic nerve blocks used?

Localised injection blocks are used in a wide range of cases, from acute pain after injury to chronic joint and spinal diseases. By precisely administering the medication to the affected area, a pronounced therapeutic effect is achieved, helping not only to relieve pain but also to restore normal tissue mobility.

The method is used to treat pain in various parts of the body, including:

  • Spine — cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions for osteochondrosis, hernias, protrusions, radiculitis;
  • Joints — shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle in cases of arthrosis, inflammation and after injuries;
  • Muscles and soft tissues — for spasms, trigger points, chronic strain and pain after exercise;
  • Nerve plexuses — for inflammation or pinching of the sciatic, occipital and other peripheral nerves.

Thanks to the high precision of the procedure and carefully selected medications, the block not only eliminates pain but also helps reduce inflammation and swelling and speed up recovery. This makes the method indispensable for the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and chronic pain syndromes.

For which diseases are therapeutic nerve blocks used?

Injection blockades are indicated when standard therapy — oral medications, external agents or physiotherapy — is insufficiently effective. The procedure provides rapid pain relief and an anti-inflammatory effect with localised action.

The method is used for the following conditions and diseases:

  • Spinal pathologies — osteochondrosis of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, radiculopathy, degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs, disc protrusions and hernias, facet joint arthrosis, spinal stenosis and nerve root compression syndromes;
  • Diseases of large and small joints — arthrosis of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle joints, arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, enthesopathy and post-traumatic conditions;
  • Muscles and soft tissues — myofascial pain syndrome, trigger points, chronic muscle and tendon strain syndrome, strain and post-traumatic pain syndromes, fibromyalgia;
  • Peripheral nerves and nerve plexuses, neuropathic pain — sciatic nerve (sciatica), occipital nerve, brachial plexus and other cases of compression or neuropathy of peripheral nerves, post-herpetic neuralgia.

FORTEMED specialists performing therapeutic nerve blocks

Medication blocks are performed by medical specialists who have undergone specialised training in pain therapy and injection techniques. Depending on the location of the problem, the block may be performed by an algologisttraumatologist-orthopaedist, neurosurgeon or rehabilitation specialist.

To achieve optimal accuracy and safety, specialists use ultrasound navigation (US) as indicated. This allows them to accurately determine the site of drug administration, control needle depth and direction, and enhance the effectiveness of the procedure.

This approach ensures maximal accuracy in identifying the source of pain and a lasting therapeutic effect with minimal patient discomfort.
