24-hour blood pressure monitoring

What is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring?

24-hour blood pressure monitoring is a method in which blood pressure is measured continuously over a 24-hour period. This method allows for accurate recording and interpretation of blood pressure readings, including during sleep. The results help confirm a diagnosis of high blood pressure or blood pressure fluctuations and develop a treatment plan.

When is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring necessary?

24-hour blood pressure monitoring is used for a number of reasons, including:
  • Confirming a diagnosis of hypertension;
  • Determining how changes in blood pressure relate to daily activities and sleep patterns;
  • Assessing the effectiveness of blood pressure medications;
  • Identifying differences in blood pressure readings between measurements taken at a medical facility and at home.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can help a wide range of people, including patients who:
  • Have been diagnosed with high blood pressure but have not yet started treatment;
  • Need to change their blood pressure medication;
  • Still have high blood pressure despite medication;
  • Are taking other medications that may affect blood pressure;
  • Experience episodes of hypotension (low blood pressure);
  • Have high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is an accurate and effective method of measuring blood pressure that provides healthcare professionals with more precise data than a single, in-clinic blood pressure measurement.

How is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring performed?

24-hour blood pressure monitoring is performed using a small device attached to your arm and secured to a belt or strap. This device records your blood pressure and heart rate at regular intervals, usually every 15-30 minutes during the day and every 60 minutes at night. These measurements are taken both during the day and at night to provide a detailed picture of blood pressure changes throughout the day.

When choosing a 24-hour period for monitoring, it is recommended to use the day that best reflects your routine schedule. Patients should plan to keep an activity log during this period, for example, sleep and meal times, and record any symptoms. Avoid strenuous physical activity, swimming, or showering, and do not remove the device without the medical staff's permission.

The results of the monitoring will be interpreted by a certified cardiologist, taking into account the patient's age and medical history. Based on this, the attending specialist will prescribe the appropriate therapy or adjust the existing therapy.
