Who is an endocrinologist?
An endocrinologist is a doctor who treats diseases of the endocrine glands and hormonal disorders, along with their consequences. These glands include the thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, ovaries and testicles. Disorders of the endocrine system affect metabolism, energy levels, weight, mood, growth, reproductive health, and many other bodily functions.
When should you see an endocrinologist?
It is recommended that you see an endocrinologist if you have symptoms or suspect a hormonal disorder, such as:
- Thyroid problems: Fatigue, weight fluctuations, rapid heartbeat, intolerance to cold or heat;
- Suspected diabetes or diabetes control: Increased thirst, fatigue, frequent urination, elevated sugar levels;
- Hormonal imbalance: Menstrual cycle disorders, infertility, severe mood swings;
- Metabolic disorders: Unexplained weight gain or loss;
- Osteoporosis: Brittle bones and fractures;
- Adrenal or pituitary gland disorders;
- Hair loss (alopecia).
An endocrinologist conducts an in-depth examination, reviews laboratory test results, and develops a treatment plan to restore hormonal balance and improve well-being.
The most common diseases treated by an endocrinologist:
- Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus;
- Obesity – high or low body mass index;
- Male and female infertility, spontaneous termination of pregnancy;
- Growth and sexual development disorders;
- Hypogonadism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS);
- Correction of climacteric disorders;
- Thyroid disorders (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, nodules, goitre);
- Epithelial disorders (hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism);
- Osteoporosis;
- Oncological diseases of the endocrine organs.
