How to get relief from chronic joint pain?

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 10% of the adult population suffers from chronic pain associated with the joints. This means that approximately 70,000–100,000 people in Latvia suffer from chronic joint pain. It is therefore clear that chronic joint pain is a common problem that affects the quality of life of many people.

The explanation is provided by FORTEMED Medical Centre's traumatologist and orthopaedist Dr Mārcis Jēgers.

Why does chronic joint pain occur?

Chronic joint pain can be associated with various causes, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, infection, fibromyalgia and other inflammatory processes.

Finally, it is worth noting that sometimes chronic joint pain can be associated with other medical problems that may require a specialist's attention. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor to determine the cause of the pain and receive appropriate treatment.

Why are joint injections more effective than tablets?

Joint injections can be an effective way to reduce joint pain because they allow a doctor to inject medication directly into the affected area. This method may be more effective than taking medication orally because the injection ensures that the medicine is delivered directly to the inflamed joint.

Injections may contain different medicines, such as corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid, which can help reduce inflammation and increase joint lubrication, improving joint mobility and reducing pain.

In addition, compared with other ways of delivering medication, such as tablets or creams, injections can provide faster and stronger pain relief. An injection may also have a longer-lasting and more effective effect because the medicine is delivered directly to the inflamed area and there is no need to wait for it to enter the bloodstream.

Benefits of hyaluronic acid injections

Hyaluronic acid injections into the joints are a way to treat joint pain, limited mobility and other joint problems. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component found in human joints that provides elasticity and moisture to the joint lubricant. Hyaluronic acid injections are most commonly used to treat osteoarthritis, a disease that causes joint irritation and pain.

Hyaluronic acid injections provide particularly long-lasting pain relief and may improve joint mobility 2–3 times longer than corticosteroid preparations. However, as with other types of injections, hyaluronic acid injections may also have side effects and risks, such as temporary soreness and swelling at the injection site.

It is important to consult your treating doctor to determine which type of injection — hyaluronic acid or corticosteroid injections — is appropriate for the particular situation and to monitor any possible risks or side effects.

FORTEMED Medical Centre offers both hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid injections into the joints. Before any type of injection, the doctor carefully assesses the nature of the problem, determines whether additional diagnostics are needed and only then prescribes the appropriate therapy.
